make your own incense sticks

How to Make Incense Sticks With Essential Oils

Ninon unscented punk stinks are premium quality wood burning sticks that are unscented and uncolored. Since the sticks have no scent they are an ideal option to create your own DIY incense. Should you decide to burn the stick as it is, it will provide a natural wood smell, however, we recommend scenting the incense stick using essential oils.

Popular DIY Incense Stick Scents

The possibilities for scenting an incense stick is endless and depends on your preferences. Here are some of our favorite custom incense sticks scents:

Wood Scents

Sandalwood, pine, cedar, juniper, pinion pine, juniper, agarwood

Herbal Scents

Sage, thyme, lemongrass, rosemary, star anise

Floral Scents

Spice Scents

Cassia, juniper leaves, lemongrass, lavender, orange powder, patchouli, cinnamon, frankincense

Tree Scents

Test out different scent combinations to see which are your favorite, for example you can try two parts sage and 3 parts sandalwood for a musky scent. Or you can accent a wood scent with a floral scent. Remember to keep a record of the different combinations you’ve tried so you can repeat them in the future.

How to Make Incense Sticks Using Essential Oils

Before you begin, gather all of the supplies you will need to scent your incense sticks. This includes any essential oils you plan to use, a long, thin dish or container that fits the sticks, and a mug to store the sticks overnight.

When looking at the incense stick, you will be scenting the spongey part of the stick, the wooden part is the end you should hold when dipping the sticks or lighting them.

You can make as many sticks at once as you’d like, you simply need to adjust how much oil you pour into the dish. Each incense stick will require a total of 20 drops of essential oils. This means if you do a batch of 5 incense sticks, you will need 100 drops of oil.

Once the oil is in the dish, you should press the incense sticks gently into the oils so it can absorb the scent. Remove the stick or sticks from the dish and place them sponge side down into a mug and let it sit for 24 hours. After 24 hours have passed the incense sticks are ready to be used.

If you want to ensure the scent of your incense sticks is very strong, you can alternatively let the punk sticks soak overnight and then allow them to sit for 24 hours.

shea butter soap

Ways Shea Butter Soap Improves Your Skin’s Health

Shea butter soap is one of the best products you can use on your skin. You may already know about the many benefits of shea butter lotion, but did you know that the soap offers just as many benefits?

Ninon’s shea butter soap is ideal for those who want to have smoother, healthier skin, but don’t want to expose themselves to products filled with harsh chemicals, parabens, and sulfates. Shea butter soap is void of all of these chemicals offer people a natural way to improve the health of their skin.

Here’s why you should switch to shea butter soap.

Shea Butter Soap Moisturizing

Your skin requires moisture to remain healthy, especially since dry skin is more prone to developing wrinkles. Additionally, unmoisturized skin tends to look dull and can become extremely itchy.

Shea butter soap is extremely moisturizing and since most of the moisturizing ingredients in this soap are the same ones produced by your body’s sebaceous glands, it is the most ideal way to re-moisturize your skin.

Shea Butter Soap Helps to Reduce Signs of Aging

Signs of aging is something everyone has to deal with, but instead of turning to products filled with harsh chemicals, or even cosmetic procedures, you should instead use shea butter soap on your skin. The ingredients in shea butter contain ingredients that help stimulate collagen production in your skin, which in turn will help protect your skin against the signs of aging. Collagen helps keep your skin looking firm and tight, however, production slows and eventually stops as you age which can cause your skin to become loose and make you look older. By boosting collagen production in your skin, you can help reverse the signs of aging.

shea butter soap benefits

It’s important to use sunscreen daily, even if it’s cloudy out, but the truth is most people neglect this advice. By using shea butter soap regularly you will provide yourself with an added layer of protection on the days you forget to use sunscreen. This is important for your skin’s health since the sun can be extremely damaging to your skin and further signs of aging.

Shea Butter Soap is Healing

Shea butter is can also help to alleviate symptoms of insect bites, bee stings, rashes, allergic reactions, scars, and stretch marks. The cinnamic acid in shea butter helps to heal the skin and calm skin conditions like acne. It is even ideal to use after exercising to soothe your muscles.

Shea Butter Soap is Gentle on Your Skin

As mentioned previously shea butter is a great option for everyone because of the many benefits it offers. Plus it’s great for people of all ages and if even gentle enough to use on babies or people who suffer from skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.

However, like anything you put on your skin, just because it works for some or most people, don’t mean it will work the same for you. The reason for our specific blend is due to the moisturizing effect of natural Shea Butter which helps to protect and heal dry skin conditions like eczema, blemishes, and acne. While the Aloe Vera helps reduce external skin irritations and soothes the skin and Vitamin E Acetate keeps the skin young and healthy-looking.

Ninon African Black Soap

What It’s Like to Use African Black Soap

If it’s your first time using this soap you might notice that your skin feels dryer and tighter, even if you normally have oily skin. Typically this reaction will only last a week. It is thought to occur in some people because the soap is drawing impurities out of your skin. Once the PH level of your skin balances out the tight, dry feeling will go away.

Some people also find that African Black soap makes their skin tingle, but like the tight, dry feeling this should resolve itself in a week. If you normally have sensitive skin it’s a good idea to test the soap out on a small area of your body to see if you have a reaction. Additionally, those who have a chocolate allergy or are sensitive to caffeine may also experience a reaction to this soap.

African Black Soap for Dry Skin

Since our black soap includes shea butter, it will greatly benefit those who suffer from dry, itchy skin. However, if you find that your skin is still feeling dry after you can try using less since a little bit of soap goes a long way here.

It’s also important to use moisturizer after showering or bathing, especially if you have dry and during winter months.

African Black Soap for Oily Skin

African black soap is great for both oily and acne-prone skin. The reason for this is that it is extremely efficient for deep pore cleansing because of its natural exfoliating qualities. Even if you have oily skin it’s recommended that you moisturize afterward with a non-comedogenic product.

Ways to Use African Black Soap

As Your Regular Body Soap

African Black Soap is excellent to use as your normal everyday body, face, and hand soap. In fact, many people choose to replace their old soap for Ninon’s African Black Soap.

To Make Homemade Body Wash

If you prefer body wash over bar soap you can dissolve the soap in purified water and use it as a body wash. All you need to do is allow it to soak long enough that it liquefies. Then store it in a bottle with a pump.

As an Exfoliant

African black soap is often used as a deep cleanser due to its exfoliating properties. If you want to use it this way, just be sure not to rub too hard to avoid irritating your skin.

To Make Homemade Body Scrub

To make a homemade body scrub with African Black soap simply mix black soap with brown or white sugar and use it as a scrub. Simply dissolve the soap the same way you should for making body wash and add the sugar. Be sure to shake the bottle or stir the container before each use.

Storing African Black Soap

In order to ensure you get the most life out of your African black soap it’s important to make sure you’re storing it properly. Since African black soap contains a high amount of glycerin the soap can soften and slowly disintegrate if left exposed.

For this reason, it’s important not to allow it to sit in a puddle after use. Be sure to keep it dry in order to prevent it from dissolving. Storing the bar on a wooden soap dish is recommended.

It’s also important to understand the African Black Soap can develop a thin white-colored film when exposed to the air. This is not mold and does not affect the quality of your soap.

Hydrating Face Mask

To make this face mix ¼ cup aloe vera gel, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, and 3 drops myrrh essential oil. Apply the mix to your face and wear for 10 minutes before rinsing off.

You can also add three drops each of those same oils to a roll-on bottle filled with a carrier oil to make a bug repellant that can be used on your skin.

atomizers gold 15ml

What is a Perfume Atomizer and Why Do I Need One?

Perfume atomizers or sprayers make applying perfume both convenient and easy. It also helps to reduce waste and mess by only applying a light misting of fragrance exactly where you want it. These sprayers work better than traditional perfume bottles because they only spray perfume in the spot you want, rather than the surrounding areas.

They are ideal because they are small and very portable making it easy to stick in your purse or take with you when traveling.

Benefits of Perfume Atomizers

Perfume atomizer bottles allow the user to apply the product with better control and less mess. Perfume oils or essential oils can become messy when applying them with your fingers and can get on your clothing or other surfaces. An atomizer, which is attached directly to the bottle, prevents spoilage and evaporation of expensive perfumes.

Another benefit is that atomizers are perfect for strong perfumes and fragrances since they enable you to spray a very small amount.

Using an atomizer also enables you to create your own custom scent. Whether you are using essential oils or fragrance oils you can mix and match to make a perfume that is perfectly suited to you.

How Do Perfume Atomizers Work?

Classic fragrance atomizers used a squeeze bulb to store air that moved quickly over the feeder tube when squeezed. The bulb had two one-way valves located at either end. When the bulb was depressed, the valve leading into the tube is forced open by air pressure while the valve leading to the outside is pulled closed. Once the bulb is released, the rubber inside returns it to its original shape, closing the valve leading to the tube, and opening the valve to the outside so that air can refill the bulb.

old fashioned perfume atomizer

Today, atomizers have a bottle with a tube that is connected to a nozzle. When the nozzle is engaged or pressed, it releases a small amount of spray through it. Atomizers mix oxygen and liquid perfume to create a fine mist, enabling you to release a small amount of perfume. When the airflow pulls some of the liquid out of the reservoir and mixes it with the airflow, the liquid breaks up into drops suspended in the air, each of which has the same ratio of oil, alcohol, and water.

How to Fill a Perfume Atomizer?

Filling a perfume atomizer is easy! All you need to do is remove the nozzle and tube; then pour the perfume into the atomizer bottle. After you’ve filled up the bottle, you simply have to place the cap back onto the bottle and it’s ready to use!

Tips for Mixing Shea Butter with Essential Oils

You may already be familiar with the many benefits of using shea butter. If you aren’t, you can learn more about the health and wellness benefits of using shea butter here. Mixing Ninon shea butter with essential oils will only help to increase the benefits of this great body butter.

The Amazing Benefits of Shea Butter and Essential Oils

On its own, shea butter is an amazing moisturizer for your skin, and can also help to address the symptoms of conditions like rosacea, acne, psoriasis, and eczema.

Essential oils are concentrated essences of pure plant material, which provide antioxidants and other compounds that can heal the skin. By adding quality essential oils to the shea butter you now have two amazing properties that can improve your skin care routine and overall health of your skin.

shea butter and essential oils

Why You Should Mix Shea Butter with Essential Oils

In addition to the benefits listed above, there are many other reasons you should consider mixing shea butter with oils. These include:

  • You Dislike the Smell – While some people may not mind the nutty smell of raw shea butter, others may want to mask the raw smell, which you may feel is off-putting. Refined shea butter, on the other hand, is deodorized and bleached, so it has no smell at all. Essential oils can enhance your shea butter by adding different exciting scents.
  • Using shea butter as a carrier – Since essential oils are highly concentrated, they typically need to be diluted with a carrier oil or butter before being applied to the skin. Shea butter is a great choice to use as a carrier in order to dilute the potency of essential oils.
  • To make your own beauty products – Mixing shea butter with essential oils can enable you to make great products like acne cream, anti-aging cream, or even massage cream.

The Best Essential Oils to Blend with Shea Butter

Now that you know more about the benefits of mixing essential oils with shea butter, let’s look at some great essential oils you can use and how it will benefit you. When mixing essential oils in shea butter you should add drops of oil for every one tablespoon of shea butter.

  • Tea Tree Oil – This is one of the best essential oils to mix with shea butter. By adding some tree oil to shea butter you’ll be able to make a great acne cream.
  • Rosemary Essential Oil – This earthy scented oil is excellent for making hair masks, and hair conditioner and shampoo.
  • Frankincense Oil – This combination makes a highly beneficial anti-aging cream. It can also be used on facial and bodily skin to fight off wrinkles, fight warts, hyperpigmentation, reduce scarring and even helps manage acne.
  • Lemongrass Oil – This combination creates a high-quality massage cream that will feel great on your skin and smell amazing too.  This oil is also perfect for treating sore, tired muscles, and can help to relieve muscle pulls, strains, and stiffness. Another benefit is it can help to treat skin conditions like acne, blemishes, and scarring.
  • Lavender Essential Oil – This well known essential oil has calming and healing properties. Due to the highly antimicrobial, anti-fungal, antibacterial and antiseptic aspects of this oil, it is great for treating acne. Since lavender oil on its own can dry out the skin, mixing it with shea butter is ideal.
  • Geranium Essential Oil – As one of the more popular oils to mix wth shea butters, geranium oil can assist with everything from premature aging to hormonal acne to preventing sun damage, inflammation, and puffiness.

If there is a favorite essential oil of yours that did not make it on this list, you can also use that when creating your blend. Don’t be afraid to get creative and even trying mixing some scents together to create a custom blend.

How Vitamin E Benefits the Skin

Vitamin E offers many benefits to the skin, one of the best being that it can help to reduce UV damage previously done to the skin. It can also help to reduce symptoms of dermatitis. Vitamin E is also anti-inflammatory, which means it helps to soothe and help calm the skin, it is also very hydrating.

Why Fragrance Oils Make the Best Scented Candles

Fragrance oils have many uses and are ideal for making the best scented candles. Ninon Corp offers a wide variety of fragrance oils in many different scents. We’ve put together a guide on fragrance oils and how to use them when making scented candles.

Understanding Fragrance Notes

To understand fragrance you can think of it like music. Fragrance has three sets of notes to create a balanced scent. These are known as top, middle and base notes.

Top notes or head notes are approximately 15-25% of the fragrance. This is the scent that you notice first and is also the scent that evaporates the quickest.

Middle notes are also known as heart notes, they are approximately 30-40% of the fragrance and make up the body of the fragrance. This is what you smell after the scent of top note has faded away.

Base notes are typically 40-55% of the fragrance. This is what is considered to be the staying power of a scent. Without a base note, the entire fragrance would evaporate too quickly and wouldn’t be able to properly scent a candle.

homemade candle

Understanding How to Smell Fragrances

When it comes to creating a scent or a fragrance it’s more involved than simply take a whiff. Instead what you should do is take three consecutive whiffs of a scent. This allows your nose to fully explore all the notes of the fragrance. Initially, you may only notice the top notes, taking multiple whiffs allows you to smell the middle and base notes as well.

If you find that the fragrances are beginning to blend together after a while you may need to take a break for a bit. Another tip is while you are actively smelling fragrances smell something like coffee beans, your clothing or even your arm in between each fragrance to clean your nasal palate.

You also need to keep in mind that everybody sense of smell is different. What smells good to you may not smell good to someone else. This doesn’t make a particular fragrance wrong, but it’s important to know that everyone will react to differently to different scents.

Using Fragrances to Make Scented Candles

Candles “throw” scents in two ways. The first is called a cold throw which is the scent you detect when the candle is unlit and at room temperature. The hot throw is the scent that is released when the candle is lit and burning.

When you are making a scented candle the wax must be melted to a specific temperature, before the fragrance can be added to the wax. Once the wax and fragrance are blended together you will be able to it cool down to the pour temperature and pour the candle into the mold.

Another factor with candle making is that the scent can be affected by the temperature at which the fragrance oil is blended with the melted wax. If you add the fragrance oil while the wax is too hot it will simply burn off, yet the wax needs to be hot enough to bond to the scent.

Soy wax is softer than paraffin wax, which means it bonds better with fragrance oils and that you’ll smell fragrance for the entire burn of the candle. In paraffin candles, the molecules are stronger and more difficult to break apart which can cause the fragrance oil to not get distributed as evenly throughout the wax. This can cause the scent to burn out. It’s important to use the right wax for candles so the scent is properly distributed.

Fragrance Options

When it comes to scenting a candle there are two types of scented oil for candles you can choose from; fragrance oils and essential oils.

Fragrance oils are made of aromatic ingredients derived from nature and created by scientific methods. The natural ingredients include essential oils, resins, and absolutes. Essential oils, on the other hand, are distilled down from the oil of the plant that they were extracted from. While essential oils are natural and can provide different therapeutic benefits, there are some drawbacks to using them in oil scented candles.

Essential oils provide a good cold throw, but tend to have a very small hot throw, meaning they will provide very little scent while burning. Additionally, the range of scents are more limited with essential oils and finally, some essential oils can be toxic to your pets, which needs to be taken into consideration first.
